Acupuncture can be used on its own or in conjunction with other therapies such as physiotherapy. When a horse is lame the body compensates for this by holding itself/ moving in an abnormal way resulting in pain and muscle spasms elsewhere in the body. Acupuncture is a drug free treatment which alleviates the muscle spasms and down regulates the chronic pain pathways in the brain, thereby allowing the horse to move and use itself correctly. Horses in full competition work also benefit as acupuncture can be used to relieve muscle spasms and tightness. It has been used successfully to treat horses with kissing spines, navicular, bone spavin, muscle tears and chronic lamenesses from previous injuries.
